So, my wonderful, lovely, not even a year and half old Macbook Pro, the one that has my NaNoWriMo novel's original files and all my wedding pictures on it?

DIED.

Today. In fact, before class. It froze up, then when I rebooted it, Silver went all "durrrrr, where's my operating system? Are you my mommy?"

And I freaked and took it to my old boss at CTS. And he told me, and I quote, "Your hard drive's hosed. I hope you have Time Machine."

And I was all NOOOOOOOOO NOT SILVER

and now we're going to the Apple Store in Syracuse tomorrow.


(at least my novel is safe in my Dropbox account, even if I did have to piece all 40 something RTF files that Scrivener made into a coherent word document)

Awww. Hope it gets fixed; that sounds horrible. [Is it me or do more peoples' computers crash during November?]

I wouldn't be surprised if all the noveling and general overwork that our computers get put through in November has caused a few of them to die from exhaustion. (I think that's what happened to Silver - I was practically living off her, and considering one day I typed 7,000 words... yeah. I don't think she could handle the pressure. O_o )

There is data retrieval software which can get your files out of a dead computer, I've had it done twice.

Mind you, I'm not sure how much it costs cos luckily my brother is an IT professional and has the software.

Yeah, I'm hoping that Apple can get the stuff off my dead drive, if possible.

It sounds like your novel's okay, but did you have backups of your wedding photos? I can't imagine what losing those would be like.

I have printed backups! :P

The professional photos are on a DVD, thank goodness, and I should be able to get all the other ones from my in-laws. So while it's a hassle, it's not the end of the world.

D: I've had the "Where's my OS?" error happen to a few of my computers (weirdly, mainly my notebooks, and the emachines box I had way back :V), usually a reboot will fix it long enough to get into the system, but obviously it wouldn't work in this case. Hope you're able to get your data! Which reminds me, I'm due to make another backup. >.>

Yeah, the guy at Apple said it could either be a ridiculously dead hard drive, or a loose/broken connection. Silver ended up being left there, and she'll be shipped off to someplace to get fixed.
