This week's [community profile] thefridayfive answers:

1. How far back can you trace your family tree?

My younger sister and I did some digging around on Ancestry.com at the end of 2023, and with some help of a distant cousin, I think we were able to trace back to our great grandfather on our dad's side, and I traced back to one set of great-great grandparents on our mother's side.

2. What is the most interesting (or strange) thing you've heard about one of your relatives?

For "strangest thing I've heard about my relatives": I think that would be all the rumors around my uncle Roy's death. (Ruth and I were really young when he passed.) It seems like different parts of the family were told different things about his death - my mother told Ruth and I that Uncle Roy was drunk while fishing and fell out of his boat and drowned, my older sister Johanna was told he committed suicide, and some of our second cousins are convinced Uncle Roy was the victim of a mafia hit. Since most of my mom's generation of the family and older are gone now, I don't know that we'll ever know the truth.

3. How do you feel about legacy names like John Henry Smith IV or naming children after other relatives?

I mean, I don't care either way - my mother gave my sisters and I variations on family names. Johanna's middle name is the same as our maternal grandma's first name, my first name was inspired by my great grandmother, and Ruth inherited our maternal grandmother's first and middle names. (Back when I was dating Franco oh so long ago, I used to joke that if he wanted a Franco III, it was going to be a dog, hah.)

4. Would you consider yourself and/or your family to be traditional?

oh no, not at all. My family is a trainwreck, and I'm about as non-traditional as it gets.

5. What is one tradition you have passed on to your children and/or plan to pass on to them?

Not having kids, so this one is kinda moot. Oh well.

Do you watch/did you watch Sesame Street?
I watched it all the time when I was a kid! When winter rolls around, I still pull out the old special, Christmas Eve on Sesame Street. It's not Christmas without it.

Who is your favorite muppet character?
Big Bird, for sure. I always loved Big Bird. Even had a Big Bird night light when I was a kid.

Who is your favorite human character?
I can't remember - I think I liked them all.

What is your favorite Sesame Street song?
I think it's a tie between C Is For Cookie and Rubber Duckie. :D

When you have children, will you let them watch Sesame Street?
Not planning on having kids. :P

1. What is absolutely the best cookie you’ve ever had?
Hmm... I actually think it may have been the snickerdoodles I made for Home Ec class back in 7th grade. It was the first thing I'd ever cooked, ever, and they came out well, and I think that contributed to it being the best cookie I ever had.

2. What is a cookie you really don’t care for?
Anything with raisins in them. I am not a fan of raisins.

3. What are some other cookies you are rather fond of?
I love peanut butter cookies, and the little peanut butter flavored cookies with the Hershey's kiss on top. Mmmm.

4. Grocery-store cookies are, of course, never as good as anything that comes out of someone’s kitchen, but what’s a packaged cookie that’s still pretty good?
There was a vegan cookie I tried once, they had it in the college store at my campus - a vegan snickerdoodle, to be exact. It was prepackaged, and ridiculously expensive, but pretty good.

5. In general, do you think cookies should be chewy and gooey, or should they be crispy and crunchy?
Chewy and gooey all the way. Crispy and crunchy cookies are alright, but I prefer them soft and gooey and hot out of the oven!

1. How’s your tolerance for alcohol?
Rather pathetic, actually.  Two drinks and I'm out.  Sometimes this leads to amusing events, most of the time it just leads to a miserable hangover when I drink beyond my usual 2 drinks.

2. How’s your tolerance for noisy neighbors?
It depends on the kind of noise, and the time of day.  If it's kids being noisy during the day, that's okay.  If it's someone clomping up and down the stairs in the middle of the night, I tend to get cranky.  And if it's some stoner douchebag living underneath me playing the bass line to Stone Temple Pilots' Sour Girl for hours and hours and hours, I tend to get really angry.  (Back a few years ago, when I was living on Bay Street, I had a neighbor like that.  They shut up pretty quickly after Bridget moved in, dealt with them for an hour, and went downstairs to tell them she'd call the cops on them if they kept up their noise pollution.)

3. How’s your tolerance for physical pain?
Eh, I can tolerate it, but I don't like it.  I can tolerate it well enough, I guess- I do have two tattoos, and have sprained my back four times.  Bee stings are the worst, though.  I was miserable when I got stung a few weeks ago.

4. How’s your tolerance for intolerant people?
I can't tolerate intolerant people!  XD  Haha, but seriously, people need to loosen up.

5. How’s your tolerance for bad music?
Depends on what you mean by "bad".  There's music that's bad because the lyrics are ridiculous, there's music that's bad because it's annoying, and then there's music that's bad because whoever's singing has all the musical skill of a yowling cat.

1. Who in your life is most likely at any time to be in a state of confusion?
⁃ I'd have to say myself. I am in my life, after all- I'm living it! And I'm very confused more often than not. For example, unless I take each assignment that I have to do for student teaching in small chunks, I get very confused very quickly.
2. Some people have described nirvana as a state of perfect nothingness. Which of the fifty United States could best be described as a state of perfect nothingness?
⁃ I dunno, maybe one of the desert states, maybe Arizona. There's a lot of broad expanses of hardly anything, at least from what I saw in the pictures Bryan took. I can see how people could be happy and peaceful there, that's for sure.
3. When were you last asked to state your name and address?
⁃ Friday night, when I check in for camping at Pleasant Late RV park.
4. How many of the United States have you been in?
⁃ Oooh, let me think... New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, California, and Florida. That's nine.
5. Why does it seem harder to maintain a positive state of mind than to maintain a negative state of mind?
⁃ I don't know... I'm guessing it's because there's so much negativity surrounding everyone that it's easier to wallow in the negative and take the easy way out, instead of making the effort to be positive.
